>Hear for literally years about how Shulk is a better protagonist than Rex because he's got more to him, that he's vengeful and darker. And that XBC1 isn't "anime" like 2
What in the fuck is wrong with you retards?
>Shulk is standard anime protagonist >Shock twist where Fiora dies >Becomes much more serious and angry, leaves on a quest of revenge >Literally fucking SECONDS LATER he's cracking silly jokes, making lighthearted commentary and back to acting exactly like generic shounen hero, always out helping people, laughing, smiling and fighting for his friends
I don't even care because I like shounen and I like Shulk, but the only time he's ever ANYTHING but a standard shounen hero is when the game suddenly remembers that he's meant to be angry and gives him some brooding line. He's insanely inconsistent and he's absolutely, undoubtedly an anime protagonist.
I would bet a large amount of money his "character arc" will be realising that his revenge is wrong/misguided and forgiving the Mechons.
>I'm so hurt/angry about losing Fiora I can't take Dunban's advice, I NEED to kill them all! >2 seconds later >If we stick together, we'll be right as *Reyn*! Haha, get it?
Jason Lee
You're a fucking idiot for even remotely believing anything said here. It's the whole old good new bad spiel when they're practically the same shit.
Jeremiah Hall
I think that's the point, is that he is actually a well executed shonen character with very clear and established motivation. Where other characters fail at even being generic.
Ayden Perry
A lot of Shulk's likability in the west comes from Adam Howden. Japanese Dub Shulk is okay but pretty standard as far as JRPG protags go. Also It turns out Shulk never really felt that strongly about revenge and was actually being manipulated by Zanza, the spirit of the Bionis, to use him as a vessel to murder the Mechonis and absorb the lives of the biological species on Bionis to empower himself
Ryan Reed
There is no such thing as a JRPG with good writing. It's just tropeshit. If you've ever so much as read a book in your life it'll make you cringe.
It's really kind of funny when you realize that was foreshadowing and not just someone unable to reconcile two positions
Justin Morgan
I'm still playing it. Like I said, I enjoy anime and I like shounen, so I'm liking Shulk.
I'm just absolutely baffled anyone could possibly try claim (with a straight face) that he's "not anime", or that he's not a standard good guy protagonist. Rex was far more consistent, at least the game knew what he was meant to be and stuck to it, Shulk changes tone almost as often as he changes outfits (that at least I do with 2 had kept). Rex had a pretty compelling arc by the end and I liked him a lot, so I'm expecting the same will work out with Shulk, the pieces are definitely there (I'm really not a fan of the forgiveness trope, so I do hope I'm wrong about that) and I'm interested to see where it goes.
But from now on I'm going to just fucking laugh at ANYONE who tries to tell me 1 "wasn't anime" or that it had a markedly different tone than 2. Both have been absolutely lighthearted and optimistic with serious undertones and themes.

>you can't make jokes ever again after a tragedy retarded. if you actually had a real life, people use humor all the time, even during funeral speeches people can use humor to make situations feel more bittersweet. fucking autist
Parker Morgan
>>capeshit >>better >No, just no. I agree with you but >Have a wojak shitpost kill yourself unfunny retard
Austin Miller
Yeah, and there’s a ton of shit like that throughout. Like seeing Shulk’s reaction when Fiora shows up later and how hard his demeanor does a u turn back to his original self
Leo Diaz
>Likes anime game >Calls someone else an autist user....
>internet says don't do heaps of side quests because you get overlevelled >majority of sidequests give no experience does this change later on or....?
Henry Rodriguez
You're a retard. There's a difference between good anime and bad anime, and Rex is a shit character. Shulk is never a naive retard like Rex is.
Matthew Phillips
he has a better shouting cry so im in
Jordan Harris
>Good anime >one I like >Bad anime >one I don't like Yeah, we understand.
Xavier Flores
Now you understand how many people here are incredibly insecure about the fact that they played and enjoyed a JRPG with Japanese writing cliches.
Adrian Johnson
>there's no quality difference across the whole medium And all games are of the same quality, right?
Nathan Cox
The only thing Shulk has over Rex is design
Jackson Torres
Rex isn't a "naive retard" either. He's living away from home supporting himself at the start of the game, he's clearly realistic about the state of the world, and when faced with an opposition he knows he can't beat, he's the one telling the team they can't just rush headfirst into it, even as badly as he wants to save Pyra. About the only thing he's ever portrayed as naieve about is not wanting his salvage tech to go towards supporting wars, with Vandham basically explaining his neutral stance is unrealistic. That's nothing.
Shulk is very similar to Rex, he's kind, optimistic, helpful, always going out of his way to lend a hand whenever he can "Shulk will be Shulk!" and talks big about how his bonds/friends are what's keeping him alive.
Ryder Collins
>But from now on I'm going to just fucking laugh at ANYONE who tries to tell me 1 "wasn't anime" or that it had a markedly different tone than 2. Both have been absolutely lighthearted and optimistic with serious undertones and themes.
Actually go back and watch XC2. The reason it gets flack for being "anime" is because it does a lot of the same kind of goofy jokes. Tora being a perv and wanting to dress Poppi like a maid. Rex waking up in Mythra's tits. Fuck, there is even a hot spring section. XC1 has a lot of anime stuff like giant robots but it has a darker tone. The Homs race is about to be wiped out, the reason Shulk goes off is because his girlfriend is murdered right in front of him and the only other Colony has half of it's population "eaten". XC2 has some heavier moments but it's far more light-hearted until about half way through.
You need a better argument than "I like this one though!" to define it. Shulk and Rex are very similar characters, they're both absolutely shounen hero's. Rex isn't even an easy fit into the "hot-blooded" archetype if you wanna try differentiate them there.
I've played both games now, and the fact I've had people telling me for years how XBC1 wasn't anime, and Shulk was a deeper/different character feels ridiculous. At least Rex is consistent, he doesn't flip flop between anger and silly jokes at the drop of a hat.
Lincoln Davis
When they say he isn't anime they mean he's not a shota bait. Also, DE Shulk looks more anime because they fucked the art style.
Fiora dying was not a twist you moron, Mech Fiora literally was on the original japanese game cover and the game was advertised with her on TV. So everyone knew she wasn't really dead that soon. youtube.com/watch?v=NTxMnKZMkLM youtube.com/watch?v=JL9-5vbyQjA

>Literally fucking SECONDS LATER Citation needed you fucking clown. We don't know how much time passed in between.
Tyler Foster
>A lot of Shulk's likability in the west comes from Adam Howden. Japanese Dub Shulk is okay but pretty standard as far as JRPG protags go. Literal lie. The English dude can't act for shit and the english translation didn't change Shulk all that much. Most of his dialogue is almost 1 to 1 with the japanese version.
Michael Sullivan
>The English dude can't act for shit this was your fatal error
Ethan Gomez
>Rex waking up in Mythra's tits
Why do so many retards misunderstand the actual joke of this scene?
They talk big about the game, like they've played it and understand it, but then write things like this, or try claim the joke was the part with her throwing stuff at Rex because that's what they saw on some webm. It's actually embarrassing. It's a really, really simple joke, but everyone who tries to insult 2 (and who totally has played it!) never seems to understand what the joke was. Maybe because it's not part of the Webms that were on Zig Forums?
>Fuck, there is even a hot spring section.
Yeah, one that had almost zero fanservice, had zero anime/JRPG cliches, and served explicitly to drive the point forwards.
What a perfect example of how "anime" the game is.
Meanwhile 1 has Dunbar giving the most standard anime destiny speech possible when Shulk and Reyn leave. Has the most cliche anime meetcute imaginable. Has plenty of fanservice for anyone looking. Has etc etc etc.
They both have very similar goofy jokes, they're both overall lighthearted and optimistic and they both have very similar tones. You wanna talk about the Homs being almost wiped out, well in 2 every landmass seems to be disappearing and there's nothing anyone can do about it, resources are running out, the Titans are dying and it's all an intractable situation.
The setup is just as serious and just as grim as in 1, and just like Shulk wants to save the Homs, Rex wants to find a new place for people to live. Both have almost the same style of story! And both treat their setups just as seriously - that is, they're mostly in the background while you run around doing lighthearted quests and play around with silly, likeable party members.
Joseph Green
It totally blindsided me when I played it the first time
Chase Harris
Of playtime you dolt. We're talking about tone.
Shulk and Reyn leave the colony grim, determined and pained over what happened... and then they hit a rabbit and Shulk starts telling corny jokes while Reyn yaks it up.
Eli Ortiz
>OP is clearly at the start of the game >I'd better drop endgame spoilers just for the hell of it
Caleb Reyes
He's really bad. One of the worst from the English cast. I can't stand the English accents but at least most of the other actors could act somewhat decently even if they were horribly unfitting to the characters. Like the dude who voiced Reyn is undoubtedly better.
Kayden Wilson
Oh sure it blindsided everybody but at the same time everybody knew she was obviously coming back(and if you were in the internet you likely spoiled yourself way before the game was localized too)
Isaiah Ward
>Shulk and Rex are very similar characters How so? Shulk doesn't have a retarded code of naive ideals he sticks by, and makes his decisions based on the information he has. Shulk also isn't an idiot, or dense.
Andrew Adams
>Why do so many retards misunderstand the actual joke of this scene? Misunderstand? What is there to misunderstand about standard haremshit hijinks?
Adam Nguyen
Hotspring scenes are, by default, fan service. Just letting you know.
Gavin Parker
>that is, they're mostly in the background while you run around doing lighthearted quests and play around with silly, likeable party members Come on man this is just disingenuous. 2 is (deliberately) way more aggressive about de-emphasizing the bleak state of its world or the deeper lore behind it until the last couple of hours.
Nathan Jenkins
>Dunbar >meetcute These are the people that don't like XB1.
Daniel Rodriguez
>Meanwhile 1 has Dunbar giving the most standard anime destiny speech possible when Shulk and Reyn leave. That's not an anime thing you moron. That's a generic fantasy thing in general.
Sebastian Brooks
>XBC1 isn't "anime" like 2 Only retards say this. The entire Xeno series has been anime since the start.
