the only VN i ever finished is dangan ronpa series. i tried a few different ones when i jailbroke my psp and pretty much all of them put me to sleep. the writing is juvenile and unengaging for most of them. i got like half way into bible black but all the porn got in the way of the story

Utawarerumono is like that if you play either the remake or the ps2 version. The original PC version has some unnecessary sexual crap. The story is better than almost everything else out there.
Also I find it weird that you mention serious story while listing Danganronpa and Ace Attorney.
