It was solid in games where you could go fast as fuck like Tribes, Quake, Teem Fortress Classic, etc. but it's fucking painful everywhere else.

CTF was popular because one mistake could cost you the game. That made for very tense games. Similarly, even if you had a bunch of retards on your team, you could still make a brilliant play that steals the flag.
Of course this isn't what ''''competitive'''' players want, but it's great for pub-play on servers.

CTF is good in fast games. in slow games it sucks major ass, so most slower games use point control, payload(move the point) and deathmatch modes instead, and rightfully so

I liked S4 Leagues reverse capture the flag where each team shared a flag and you had to drop it into an enemy's base. Generic modes like death match are boring and only suit those with low attention spans.

back when people could actually work together and PTFO. Now CTF and most every PTFO
obective-based game is just to farm kills for a higher K/D.
It's also a reason MOBAs are so popular, since you're not really forced to PTFO while there are objectives.

I know people here have mixed feelings about halo but I recall one of the earlier games had options for various modes of CTF including what I think is reverse CTF. I will say though, despite having the same ruleset it definitely didn't play as well as I hoped. Maybe its just the slow paced movement.

i think part of what makes S4L's Touchdown good is that both teams are fighting for control of the same "flag", like in sportsball there's only one ball, but in CTF where you deliver your flag to the enemy there's two flags, which is an unnecessary split of objectives. Plus, in S4L if you're in a tough spot, most good maps allow you to jump off the map and reset the flag, giving your team some time to regroup
on the other hand, TF2's Delivery only has one delivery pad, also in the middle of the map but on the other side, and this sucks too because to win you have to a) stop the enemy who control the flag from capping it on the point, b) control where the flag dropped until it resets, c) take the flag from where it respawns, d) bring it to the point, e) hold the line whine you cap the flag. this is too tedious and leads to infinite stalemates, but that might be a result of you needing to control the launch pad for a long while
so the "1 flag; 2 goals, one per team" structure strikes the balance between tediousness and splitting the team impossibly thin. really good design, and like all designs it might've been a total accident
