Is it safe to say that TLOU 2 will set the new standard for realtime 3D visuals? How many next-gen games will achieve this level of graphical complexity? How long will it take to be surpassed?

Not a fan of that artstyle, but launch games are usually the most impressive looking games even many years after they launched. So it probably won't take long.

OP's picture is at 4k resolution. I don't know what it was rendered at, but it sure as shit isn't true 4k. Maybe this is the "checkerboarding" that Sony advertises

this game had so much potential.

Temporal upscaling is used by both the Ps4 Pro & Xbox One X. Microsoft dubbed their implementation "Sparse Rendering" and Sony went with the "Checkerboard" moniker. The film grain filter on this particular game, along with the associated blurriness of the checkerboard upscaling are both entirely different issues (which significantly detract from the image quality on display). I wish they'd just leave the pixels raw, unaliased and sharp as fuck at a native 4k, myself, but beggars cant't be choosers.

there's barely anything to see and even that's covered up by 3 layers of cheap post-process effects to hide the lack of detail

i don't even say that to rip on consoles, i'm sure the PS5 will be capable of much better graphics
in fact you could probably just launch Dishonored 2 on a PS4 Pro and it'll look tons better

i honestly think TLOU2 looks really ugly
it might look muh realistic but overall it just looks gross, everything is gray and brown
