Not impressive. But Midgar really is a very linear part of the original, so it’s no surprise that it turned out that way.
The rest of FFVII should be open world. Storywise there is no reason for Cosmo Canyon to be done before Rocket Town, or Rocket Town after Nibelheim. They should make 80% of the game optional. But knowing nuSquare they definitely wouldn’t.

The best parts of VIIR were the linear missions. The worst parts of FF in the last decade is stuff like XV and Lightning Returns. Square can't make games like that so I don't think anyone should force them.

The base game put me off ever trying hard.
Off the cuff, yes I'm bad at video games- sue me, but I got really frustrated especially in the latter half because the game keeps swapping around your party before making you fight these bosses with exactly one effective strategy that often isn't obvious- and if you don't get that strategy (because you built your team differently or kept materia on the wrong targets) you'll get fucking chain-stunned/juggled.
eg. Rufus. He scoots around and shoots you with unavoidable bullets, and only backs off to reload.
Apparently the strategy is to bait him into the edge of the arena so you can catch to with him while he's reloading and use, very specifically, Braver- the slow as fuck move with a long windup that misses any kind of evasive target. Could have been any physical attack, but no, Braver and only Braver.
It's reaaaaaaaallly fucking fiddly and unintuitive and without abusing that the fight is a slog because he'll just parry everything. Could be my fault for not having Assess on Cloud, but it still pissed me off- and because the only option was to refight Rufus with my unoptimised kit or reset to before Jenova I also lost a shitload of time.
I wanted to play the remake like a traditional RPG where stats are king, but it's all about flawless execution of often-times esoteric strategy. It feels like they wanted to make a character action game but couldn't commit.

I did that, didn't have Assess or Heal, and got bodied.
Yeah I did, the first phase wasn't an issue (except for Rufus being a dickhead and interrupting/juggling you from the distance while trying to kill the dog.
Also the boss HP thresholds in this game can suck my nuts. I wasted so many stagger burst opportunities to cutscene triggers.
