It struck me as non-stop shock value. Yeah it's a war movie, and that's the point, and the shock value is effective, but why does Kubrick get hailed as a genius for stringing a bunch of edgy wartime scenes together? Anybody could have done it, he just happened to do it at the right time with enough marketing for it to be a hit.
