Monster Boy pays homage to the Monster World / Wonder Boy series by playing up a classic Metroidvania style game. Fun monster transformations, classic exploratory platforming, and an OST supervised by Yuzo Koshiro, Streets of Rage + Etrian Odyssey composer.

It's got a lot of classic gameplay with some modern sensibilities.

Gameplay wise, it's okay. Kinda barebones, and the world can be uninteresting at times. Lots of places that only have one feature and that's it, you never visit them again.

Story wise, it is the biggest, stupidest crock of crap that I have ever heard. And I'm not disagreeing with any of its messages, I just think it's downright stupid in terms of conflicting tones and attempts at shoddy comedy and drama.

Monster Boy is the fusion of Monster World + Wonder Boy. I have only played Monster World 4 and MW3: The Dragon's Trap remake, but Monster Boy is most similarly structured to MW3

OP here, from watching a few preview vids, I'm surprised there's even much of a story, I was hoping it's mostly puzzle+action.

no its boring as fuck. the best badges in the game are just the movespeed ones that let you just get to the credits faster.
the story just falls apart and it leaves you feeling like "wtf did I just play".
the game is gorgeous but that doesnt mean jack shit without interesting gameplay. I played 10 hours and I couldnt wait for it to JUST FUCKING END.

Is a bit of a puzzle with plataforming, and you fight some mooks and bosses. You don't have a lot of ofensive moves, most of the variation on the comes from a equip system wich you get more trough crafting (resources will be most of your rewards for exploration).
The story has some really high points but GOD does it goes off the rails after a certain point, then it's just downhill.
Black is the best character, everyone else is either an ass, dumb, or both. I don't remenber if there is a skip story button, but if there is, only use it when you know Black is not coming up.

apparently most of the development time was spent on those cutscenes. while they look nice, it's just a shame it bloated the dev time into a decade as a result. he could've gone back later and put them in or had help from a small studio or something after it sold some.

It is, a bit more puzzle in levels and action in bosses. Don't worry about the story weighting it down or something.

The main character is okay, but she's unremarkable compared to other silent protags.
