Pokemon was always a low effort series compared to its contemporaries

>Pokemon was always a low effort series compared to its contemporaries
>successful and popular on brand strength alone
>only recently started getting called out for it

What changed?

Its now even a low effort compared to previous entries in its own series.

>Pokemon was always a low effort series compared to its contemporaries

Then why is it the only JRPG with a decent battle system?

Pokemon games were always buggy messes..

Its because millions will buy it either way, Game Freaks are some of the laziest and most incompetent developers out there, Nintendo themselves can't really do anything because they aren't the sole owners of pokemon, the games will never become better until the heads of the studio get the fuck out of it.

watch out they'll tell you the battle system is fucking boring. most people who say this are single-player retards. game freak is also retarded for not taking advantage of how deep pokémon's battle system is

the problem with new Pokemon is not graphics or muh dex
Pokemon has clung to the same conventions, structures, and ideas since the first games. Those initial games were just a passion project by a small magazine team working on shitty Gameboy hardware/controls. People like the underlying idea of Pokemon, and that fact is clearly demonstrated by the constant success of the property in different multimedia formats. The idea of going on an adventure and taming wild monsters is one that resonates with people. That idea had to be mangled down to fit on a game boy, but Gamefreak has never reexamined how they could convey the core idea of the series using the much expanded budget, processing power, and control options, now available to them. For example, why do Pokeballs still exist? They are just a way to abstract out a more natural taming process and to provide a reason for not having every character surrounded by their Pokemon in the overworld. These concessions MIGHT be valuable even in a hypothetical situation of infinite budget and processing power, but it is very clear that Gamefreak is unwilling to really examine things like this.

playing a romhack got me to appreciate the battle system a lot more. i get why gamefreak makes the game piss easy, but only putting real effort for multiplayer doesn't appeal to me. i'd rather try out showdown

>Then why is it the only JRPG with a decent battle system?
oh wait, are you serious?

they were low effort series made for low effort portable consoles aka gameboy so no one complained, but now you have a low effort series inside of a "modern and powerful" console, obviously is not the same and gamefreak has to step up their game or just abandon the pokemon project.

The only people still defending pokemon are actual autists who like to see number go up, and enjoy predictable fights that make them comfortable. For everyone else the nostalgia veneer and remaining childish goodwill has completely gone.

>game freak is also retarded for not taking advantage of how deep pokémon's battle system is

But what gets me is:

a) How easily every other company gets away with vastly shittier gameplay
b) How few people care or even understand how pointlessly dumb the bulk of the genre is in comparison when it could easily be better

What are the gba games on the top left and right?

Do you seriously think there is anything better?

Meant bottom right.

Samefag shill.

Why are all the 'other' games here portrayed as completely over saturated messes?

They're called pocket monsters because they go in your pocket, pokeballs are key to this fundamental concept

The GBA didn't have a backlight so devs upped the brightness and saturation of colors to compensate in non-ideal circumstances

Bottom right of GBA screenshots is edited, there’s no cave on Treasure Beach and the tiles are fucked up.

Is this a real question?
Honestly man, any other kind of battle system is better, the regular turn based JRPG system is better, think of it, what makes pokemon battle system special? Only type match-ups, which only make the 4-move standard shittier, battles just turn into "Who's the fastest" (try playing Pokemon Showdown).

People only noticed because SWSH cut the actual Pokemon themselves
Not like it mattered they're still the most successful games besides the Gameboy games

Low-quality 3D is a lot more noticeable.

t. filtered babby
Lmao git good before spouting retarded nonsense.

You really need to play more games.
Even if you get into the meta, Pokemon just isn't really fun or engaging.

What changed?
>unironically, SOUL

I don't know if it's low effort or if Game Freak is just hopelessly overwhelmed in making a console games with a small team, so they cut corners everywhere. Needless to say that they all (Nintendo, Game Freak, Pokemon Company) are greedy fucks who don't give a shit since the games sell anyways. And it doesn't seem like they have any passion left for the series

>he didn't uncover the cave on Treasure Beach

I was talking about the Switch games mostly. BotW does not look like that.

fpbp

There's still passion in the monster designs

At least they had good pokemon designs before to compensate for how shitty everything was.

There aren't other JRPGs that are "more fun and engaging" though. It basically is the pinnacle of the genre, and people who claim otherwise are generally shown to be brainlets quite easily.
