1-3 had genuinely good stories that people ignore because they choose to focus on the more goofier aspects instead. It wasn't until 4 when shit genuinely did become stupid.

It’s a real shame about 4 and V. Especially 4. It’s obvious a ton of work and thought was put into the graphics, environments, and gameplay with a lot of creative ideas just on the surface. It’s all held back or ruined by Kojima’s terrible writing and directing.

Fuck man, MGS4 and 5 needed that shit. In MGS4 there's only Rose and Otacon, making it very lackluster for a high budget mainline game. Good codec dialogue is MGS.

In MGS5 everyone is a goddamn mute which goes to show Kojima can't write for shit.

They wanted to move away from video games as a company and further towards gambling machines, as Japan was looking to reform their gambling laws.

Everything in MGS4 is intentionally cringe, Kojima destroying everything that came before it simply because he was suffering from ED/the impotency of being able to pass his series on to his team.
I think Snake even tells Raiden in this scene, "that's not what I meant" with regard to his message at the end of MGS2.
MGS4 is pure kino in the weirdest meta way.

with the metal gear series, I can excuse most of the cheesiness because "it's supposed to be like that" and its sort of endearing. But then in death stranding kojima completely drops that pretext and makes an unironically nonsensical and stupid plot with characters that you end up disliking instead of empathizing with
