The entire point of the dead weight bit ties into the moment Nero has before M20. Being called dead weight really hits him the wrong way because he still feels responsible for Credo dying due to not being strong enough. When Dante said that, to Nero the implication was "if you get involved, people will die." The reality is that Dante in that exact moment didn't think anybody could handle Urizen and he wanted everybody out because he doesn't want his nephew or anybody else dead on his watch either.

But yeah he got turned into some kind of a jock. Even his voice lines feel more snide. I guess they wanted to differentiate him further from Dante and this is the direction they chose. Honestly I would've preferred if he grew more classy over the years, trying to be more like Credo or something.

Donte starts his game as a more degenerate version of 3 Dante, trying to keep a low profile but having vices for sex and drugs. He spends most of DmC being a prick to people because he's jaded or whatever. He ends his game having found some vague sense of duty to protect humanity from other demons. Nero is a church kid that has to accept a demonic side of himself he barely understands and his entire character is focusing his father's inherited lust for power towards protecting the people he cares about. Donte kills to further his goals, and those goals eventually become to protect. Nero has always wanted to protect people and he goes all unga bunga because he feels unable to; his DT unlocks when he finally resolves that he isn't letting anybody else die on his watch whether it's his business or not.
