Was doing mage, but now ranged with a dart rifle. Was wondering if I should switch to a dart pistol for the higher firing rate, I bet machine gunning crystal darts would be able to break the swarm of drones. I do have the flying slime mount, and the blade staff, but would the sanguine staff work better?

If ranged, the storm bow still works very well on the destroyer when paired with holy arrows. Damage was nerfed but it still puts out good numbers and you hardly have to aim it. Never used it but I think the onyx blaster would be good for the drones.
Otherwise for magic, ichor book piercing will do very high damage to the destroyer by hitting a bunch of parts at once. Crystal book will let you focus on drones better.

I did the destroyer second with a hollow repeater and cursed arrows on master. You could probably manage with an ada/tita repeater. Always reforge for the best or second best modifier and take potions + summon as much as you can.

Well yeah the Tome of Infinite Wisdom is well and good enough, but getting the Ogre to spawn in the Old One's Army requires a mechanical boss kill, and I wanted to use the Destroyer to farm Hallowed bars to get Hallowed armor.

You can also do this horizontally with frozen slime blocks. Frozen slime blocks are unique in that they have zero friction, so any momentum you have while traveling on them will be preserved. In 1.3 worlds I used to dig a tunnel across the entire world and line it with frozen slime, and use a portal gun to build up speed and uncap max speed and use that to speed across the world in an instant. Now with pylons and conch shells I don't need to do that anymore, but it still works.
