Why are English voice actors so God awful?

They aren't. You just don't speak japanese so you think "uwu watashi wa kawaii senpai" in the same annoying high pitched voice every time is good voice acting

1/2 overacting, 1/2 you probably don't understand any other language so you don't really pick up on bad VAs in other languages

I do speak Japanese and 3 other languages, dumb American poster. English voice acting is by far one of the worst.

Because video games are run by soulless corporations who have only the most-business minded folk at the top. Business minded folk dont give a shit nor care to give a shit about art so as long as the voice acting is "good enough" and cheap that is what will be chosen.

There are great VAs, it's just there's a weird culture of shitty dubs in anime/jrpg circles. They just keep hiring the same tropey, shitty VAs over and over again. Look at western games like The Witcher, Vampyr or Red Dead Redemption and tell me English VAs are awful.

Mostly because of direction. It's not the voice actors themselves are awful, at least not most of the time. Usually it's an incompetent director or publisher who wants to westernize the script while still retaining the "japanese-ness" of it. For example, casting shrill voiced bimbos and making them try to sound like japanese voice actresses. It just doesn't work, and yet they try to do it every time.

Going with british television and stage actors instead of your usual californian VAs was a great decision

You would think that with games trying so hard to be movies they would put some emphasis on the important role of voice acting and try to get it right. But they just hire the same 10 scrubs who have never done an acceptable voice acting job in their careers. Motherfuckers can't even deliver a line, 80% of the time it just sounds like they're flatly reading from the script.

Also when they get them to do scenes/lines with no context.
