I just want a giant misty forest I can ride through with my horse and then make my own bonfire to rest at.

I want 3d RPG HORROR

Ya'll want a rushed game filled to the brim with unused content like every Fromsoft game that wasn't Sekiro?
Be patient. It'll be good.

I want boats and spooky rivers

OOOOOOOHHH

combat should never be the focus of Souls games

youtube.com/watch?v=QX-vIlvruqo

most games have a ton of cut content just like Souls games, but the community surrounding Souls games is uniquely enthusiastic enough for this content to become common knowledge, thus it seems like Souls is unique for having cut content

It's a G.R.R.M. game, so it's never coming out

I hope this is good, but I'm concerned about GRRM's involvement. I assume his name is just on it because of marketing (actual bilingual collaboration would presumably be incredibly difficult for a lazy old writer?), but the extremely detailed GRRM style seems to me mostly mutually exclusive to Miyazaki's vague lore style that a lot of souls fans like.

Atmosphere and level design, but combat is still incredibly important. People who claim that 'combat isn't why Dark Souls was good' are retards who don't understand the idea that a whole can be greater than the sum of it's parts. Combat is absolutely why Dark Souls was good, it's just not the only reason.

actually it's not
what's cool about GRRM's writing is that while the present story is very detailed and specific, the lore is not. And so there's massive amounts of discussion about grrms's lore, because a lot of it is open ended. The only information you get about the history, is what the present characters know and read, but they often have conflicting knowledge, from biased sources. Even when they reference history books, there's some question as to if certain writers embellished the history, or if parts were even made up completely. So what you get is actually something that's pretty similar to souls lore, where you have a bunch of different snippets of history that you have to piece together. On the other hand, if you look at the history in tolkien's silmarillion for example, the history is written objectively, where the author simply describes what happened. As far as fantasy writing goes, grrm isn't at all a bad choice, in my opinion.
Though I do agree that he was most likely chosen just for marketing, the show was huge back when elden ring was announced
