to reach a place that you can't reach with a regular jump

You jump again after your first jump, that's the whole idea. What are you some sort of retard that couldn't figure it out on his own?

Good level design is hard. Implementing double jumping isn't.

more pushy button make grug happy

I'm lovin it.

So was your question "what's the ideal double jump" or "what's the idea behind the double jump"?

In gameplay terms, more aerial control. Plus it feeds that little instinct you have when you're first starting to play videogames that moving the controller will somehow make your jumps go further.

Jesus

You use magnets to propel yourself further, it's basic physics

Triple jump

if you can double jump, you should be able to double jump off the second jump of a double jump, jumping infinitely?

Fuck you and your gay ass thread, try jumping twice irl nerd, I’ll watch you fall face first and only laugh at your complete and utter buffoonery.

yeah...I would love to see someone do it in real life

Good level design allows for more complex level design you stupid faggot. I've had to argue this before and Im surprised it wasn't just one retard. If your game has a single jump, the only complexity comes from jumping at the last second to maximize distance, or jumping so that you reach the platform height at the apex of your jump. With a double jump, you can have pic related

have you ever heard of "wall jumping", son?

so much complexity bruj....
just make the lower platform a bit more to the left and thr higher to to right
bam, now you can access both with a single jump, you troglodyte

double jump is dumb, you can't double jump in real life and believe me I tried!

With less complex input, so you made a more shallow and less challenging game.

You can have wall jumping on top of a double jump, they're not mutually exclusive. If someone had to explain this to you, then I'm afraid you're retarded.

And this retard is missing the point, not surprised considering
>bruj....

adds complexity to your game without much work or thought

unlock double jump and go back to first level to get hidden treasure

The height of the second jump must be the same as the first jump. That's the ideal double jump.

i'm paraphrasing here, but bennett foddy once said that "a control scheme is defined by what you can't do." when you have double jumping, then your first jump no longer requires as strict a timing and your other tools become less important.

ultimately the problem is with most games aren't like dustforce or i wanna be the guy where double jumping requires demanding timing, rather most games are like jak and daxter where it is just to course correct and adds nothing to the game. however even then, double jumping is one of the least interesting mechanics you could add. long jumps, grapple hooks, wall running, and damage boosting are all better choices.

Surely then a triple jump would be even better? A quadruple jump?

My favorite is the double jump you get when you find the Space Jump Boots in Metroid Prime. Movement in the game becomes so much more satisfying afterward.
