I had a great time with it but that is definitely a shit design
Firstly, that outfit has obvious improvements that can be made in the diving/fashion department, but also, why is he wearing a salvaging outfit for land battle?
and this guy is the final boss because he kills all the other badguys off screen since they are no longer useful to him

If he actually wore the diving suit from the intro and the minigame with the helmet down he would look fine, but instead we get a hideous short bodysuit with gigantic boots. You can't excuse this.
You don't have to defend literally every aspect of a game you like user. Unless you're severely autistic, this kind of thing isn't exactly all or nothing.

It's extremely jarring and cringe worthy to anyone who isn't a megaweeb. Also kills the immersion when dramatic things are happening and you have to look at the abomination of the designs. Not everyone has low standards so it's understandable people dislike the design. It elicits the same response to me as deviantart OCs.
Shulks design really is fucking good. His clothes look like the could work in real life with a few adjustments, yet he still looks fantasy enough for a JRPG. It also helps that he is pretty likable for a maincharacter because he isnt all that generic.
