Yep. RE7 was a reboot for the series and seems to disregard most of the RE story from 6 and back, with the only constants being Umbrella and Chris Redfield. This seems to be a direct sequel to 7 so if you haven't played it you will be lost on the Ethan/Mia/Baker Virus story.

No basically it was someone's dream game which was too crazy to make it into a mainline RE game. So they made it a revelations 3 title but then it tested so well that the real RE8 got pushed back and this got promoted into RE8 due to lots of people commenting this is the best RE game in years.
