Depending on mechanics like crit chance, chance on hit effects etc, ring of flowing water might actually increase overall DPS or end up only being like a 2-3% actual damage reduction over time for a huge survivability boost.

a shield that's on fire and deals 50% damage absorbed as fire damage back to the enemies, the catch is that you're not immune to the burns
Some strictly physical and magical based shields
A balanced mixed shield, but it doesn't block 100% damage
A mediocre shield but it passively gives you healing/buffs/etc.
A FUCKHUEG heavy shield that can be used to ram people
A small shield designed to parry instead of block
