More like Ultimate is gimmicks and setplay: the game. There are only a few fundamental characters.

Only in the sense you play a character because you like the character. He's silly in Ultimate with tools that some characters have very limited options to. He straight up loses to the characters who have easy answers to his nair/projectiles, though.

you miss an attack? its actually a missed attack you get punished because you cant start your next attack in what is practically the middle of your previous one.

you hit them with a forward smash at 10 percent? it doesnt fucking kill.

Pichu isnt even that small. Pichu is almost as tall as Ness hurtbox wise and doesnt even get away with the bullshit pikachu does like pancaking even after being hit. On top of that the character does over 100% of self damage per match and dies to any stray aeriel or tilt at 70%. Pichu should probably be smaller than she is atm being honest especially since they fucked the character's hit boxes and making Pichu recovery more 2 framable due to hurt box increase.

Other characters can reasonably shut them down without prior knowledge. For example, Sonic would not be considered "honest" because it takes very specific knowledge and prediction to punish his setplay. Marth is considered honest because it doesn't take anything to understand how to deal with his moves.

Hurtbox shifting is probably the single worst thing about Ultimate along with character pushback. So many characters get away with stupid shit for this reason.
>bowser can't be grabbed randomly
>luigi green missle recovery is incredibly safe
>inkling dashing into attacks
>characters like joker attack and dodge in the same animation
>you can nair with a character like Link and have a long active hitbox, but a character who extends a non-disjoint in a frame into it trades
>moves like Cloud or Joker's dtilt antiair

Let me think here. There really aren't too many. The pits, Marth and Lucina, DK, Fox, Ike, Rosa, Wolf. Not saying they are all equal in balance or anything, but they all have to play with a simple toolset. Rosa may seem like the outlier but Luma clanks with any aerials so the jank or necessary outside information is minimal. Some honorable mentions would be characters like Wario, Sheik, PT, Ridley, Roy/Chrom, Peach, Mii Brawler, Mario, MK, Greninja, Ganon, Falco, Falcon, Diddy, but they all have some aspects so overtuned that certain characters struggle to have proper options to put out against them. Or they can do something silly like aerial a shield with retard spacing and roll away buffered free.
