question about 9s though. was his purpose for existence is not to "fight for humanity with all of [his] strength", but rather make 2b suffer through the consequences of her sole purpose (being an executioner)?

come to think of it, even after learning the truth about humanity not existing anymore, he doesn't just go berserk because of losing his purpose (like all the machines in the castle area after having their emperor killed, or that songstress machine; remember: android cores = machine cores). it may be that originally his purpose was to serve humanity, but after being killed over and over again, it is implied that he never did get his memory wiped (that scene with 9s hacking himself showing his past memories including those that were supposed to be deleted).

so why come to the conclusion that his purpose was to make 2b suffer each time she kills him? it may be that despite her killing him each time, he gets the satisfaction of knowing that 2b is remorseful of her actions ("it always… ends like this…"). so then when 9s sees 2b getting killed by a2, he loses his only purpose and leads to the path of his own destruction.
