The original Super Mario Bros 2 was a shitty expansion that used the exact same engine and had terrible level design; Doki Doki Panic gave the sequel its own identity in the line of 3 and World, and has ultimately shaped the Mario franchise far more than Lost Levels ever could.

Yes USA version of SMB 2 is one of my favorite games and the Japan version of SMB 2 came later on Super Mario All Stars so it worked out.

But they did bring the actual Mario Bros 2 (Lost Levels) over just a few years later. Doki Doki Panic is unfortunately lost to history as even Japan gets the USA version of SMB2 in place of Doki Doki Panic when it comes to re-releases.

Yes. Lost Levels didn't bring enough new to the table. All it had was Luigi jumping higher (which was in DDP anyway) and poison mushrooms, which could be added in any other Mario game or not, because it's just an anti-powerup. DDP was a much more interesting game.

NoA themselves admitted that if Lost Levels came out, it would have tanked Mario's unprecedented popularity at the time since the game was so easy to pick up and play and had a good number of casual stages before it really started getting hard on players. Rebranding DDP gave a fresher coat to Mario and friends that allowed for even more marketing without retreading familiar territory too soon, since even Mario 3 didn't make the mistake of having the princess kidnapped until the very end of the game, which was more of a twist instead of lack of originality that plagues the series going forward.

on one hand, doki doki panic was made by all the same people and is a better game in literally every aspect than mario 2, which is just the original bullshit romhack that has shit like powerups that actually kill you, warp zones that send you backwards, and underwater enemies flying around in midair even if that looks stupid
