Is Silent Hill Origins underrated?
I think it was really good for a psp-oriented game. It still had great soundrack composed by Yamaoka and it didnt shit on the original game's canon as much as other western Silent Hill games.

Travis is probably the biggest retard amongst SH protagonists, even counting mentally ill James Alex. He had no reason to stay in Silent Hill after his interaction with Kaufman in the lobby. But nooooo Travis couldn't just mind his own business and had to be the nosey little cunt that started the whole mess
It's a decent game for SH, just "more of the same".
yeah, but there are lots of people that see no difference between american-developed SH games and think Origins is as shitty as Homecoming and Downpour which is just unfair.
I think it is. Also ORT is a damn good song.
>He had no reason to stay in Silent Hill after his interaction with Kaufman in the lobby
Haven't played it in a while, but doesn't he basically get trapped once he's inside Silent Hill? It's 'dead end, shit's locked', the town.
there is no way to tell, if you try to pass the hospital Travis will stop and say something like "I cant leave yet, I must know what happened to the girl". Same happens if you try to exit the hospital after talking to Kaufman or encountering the first nurse. I think at the hotel Kaufman even asks Travis why the fuck havent he left yet.
it fucks up the lore just like homecoming and i just consider it fan fiction.
i was just a lame phone game
>'dead end, shit's locked', the town
only when you trying to get somewhere, not out
it was on psp and ps2, zoomer
psp full of phonegames
psp was essentially a phone that doesn't call
The story is absolute garbage and doesn't really understand the first SH game but the gameplay and level design is actually decent and tried to stay faithful to the older games, more so than Homecoming and Downpour. Only thing the game needed was tank controls.
Origins is really good. What design issues it does have were caused by the fact Konami forced Climax UK to make it in about 12 months. The story was (re)written in a week by Sam Barlow, using the Silent Hill Original Sin project as a foundation. He did all the monsters in a week, too. Konami also forced him to use FMV sequences intended for a completely different game. That's why Kaufmann runs across the road at the start of the game, dressed in a cloak.
Travis is a serial killer that preys on women, and I think the game does a decent job of not really hiding this fact, but having a lot of players miss it.
Origins perfectly understands the original Silent Hill. The issue is that Sam Barlow's hands were tied on a few things.
I think its single biggest mistake was making the otherworld more video gamey by turning it into a traversal/puzzle mechanic. It allowed for more complicated levels, but at the cost of robbing all tension from the thing with the biggest potential to surprise and unsettle the player. It just becomes this rote performance of flipping back and forth to progress.
>Travis is a serial killer that preys on women, and I think the game does a decent job of not really hiding this fact, but having a lot of players miss it.
in what way? The remark on the description of a shovel? The non-canon bad ending?
Ignore the story and it brownnoses the original trilogy so hard it almost can't miss from a gameplay perspective. The few new ideas it tried ended up making it weaker but it's still like a 7/10 survival horror. But seriously, ignore the story.
>not out
You can't really get anywhere that resembles an exit in these games even if you tried to explore.
he is a serial killer? what? elaborate please
Breakable weapons were a mistake. I feel like 90% of gameplay is picking up weapons that break in 2 hits so you're constantly menuing to equip new ones. It feels silly carrying 30 TVs. I'd rather just have one pipe made of indestructium.
Travis, James, Heather and Alex could just get back into a car and drive as far away as possible.
Harry and Henry 100% had no way out. And I didnt bother with Downpour, I dunno about Murphy.
Heather couldn't really get out since the cult was hounding her and taking the power of the town with them. She would have to be constantly on the run and live in fear of the cult using the weird town mumbo jumbo around her.
All 7th gen games are underrated.
Of the western games, it's the closest one to the classic games. but it plays too safe.
Homecoming was too different, SH was good but not really a SH, Downpour had good ideas but bad execution and monster design.
also, anyone saw this? it's probably the rumored game.
He makes odd remarks about shovels and plastic bags, and he was traumatized by this mother, who tried to kill him. All throughout the game, there's strange imagery regarding split personality and femininity. He passes between the two worlds using a mirror. The first mirror he uses is located specifically in the women's bathroom.
During the opening sequence, one of the other truckers asks, "Travis you messed up son of a bitch, what you doing on my road?" Everyone knows that there's something wrong with Travis, and there's a section where the CB radio is talking about Travis, but the static obscures some important parts.
And there's the photos in the motel. And there's the medical document talking about how victims of abuse can develop alternate personalities. This is intentionally ambiguous since it could refer to multiple characters.
Travis also behaves oddly towards Lisa.
Murphy is genuinely trapped in SH.
I was more talking from a gameplay perspective. James could probably return to where he started at around the graveyard and starting areas of the game. After the apartments? I think he's fucked.
downpour monster design is bad overall but the weeping bat is genuinely my favorite SH monster
Travis also is Homecoming, did you knew that? he's just a lot older.
If you investigate a plastic bag as Travis, he says, "This would be fantastic to suffocate someone with." It is incredibly on the nose. The entire game revolves around mirrors. Travis was abused as a child, and his mother attempted to murder him. The mirror demons told her to do it or something like that. The Butcher is Travis's serial killer alter ago. His mirror self. The Butcher also has half his face covered with a mask. youtube.com
Wheelchair man also was alright, Ito even did a drawing of it.
James is fucked after he drops down the hole in the Historical Society, that's when the game turns into a point of no return (and coincidentally enough also becomes more linear).
He's a trucker. Perfect for your alibi while ur picking up hookers.
If Konami ever properly remaster the series, they need to do proper remasters of Origins and Shattered Memories and put them on PC. The PS2 version of Origins has an annoying bug where the music doesn't loop like it does on PSP.
