Sunshine is shit. SHIT.
It bills itself as a sequel to 64 but then goes on to use the exact opposite design philosophies. Think about how many stars you need to beat 64 playing normally. 70, right? Only one of those stars is really required, and that's to be able to access Bowser in the Fire Sea. Those other 69 stars can be gotten anywhere at any time, and can be from stages OR secrets, and it allows the player to beat the game even if there's a mission they're having problems with. Plus, it rewards players who find secret stars. Mario 64 rewards exploration, while Sunshine is having none of it.
With Sunshine, there are specific shines you need to beat the game. You need the Shadow Mario shines, which are always the 7th level of each stage. Because of the way Sunshine is set up, you cannot get any shines out of order or skip them (save for Bianco 1, oddly enough, which makes me feel like it was a last minute addition alongside other reasons), you HAVE to get the first 7 shines of each level and the game is then able to be beaten. This completely defeats the purpose of ANY secret shines available to you, because in the end they're a crock of useless shit padding. Blue coins? Why the fuck even bother with them when the shines rewarded to you do NOTHING anyway? Sunshine has these big open stages but railroads you through them each level because the devs completely missed what made 64's levels work so well and be so fun to explore. FUCK Mario Sunshine. It's general design makes me infuriated even if the game is fun to control at times.

Wow, a game world I'd like to spend time in! What happened to this design aesthetic in the West? We had Banjoo Kazooie and a couple others and now it's all mud and blood.

What's the point of creating worlds of limitless possibility and imagination if all we get are hellscapes, apocalyptic nightmares, modern warzones and cyber cities?
