because the game comes close to greatness but pulls its punches and focuses on waifubait instead. it also has some narrative flaws that should have been fixed in Royal. it's also clear Atlus is milking the shit out of the Persona series now and doesn't care anymore about creating compelling stories.

I like the gameplay, music, and aesthetics and would argue that it's objectively better than P3 or 4 in that regard.

However, the story is completely asinine and feels like a bizarre regression compared to the previous games. Royal sounds a bit more provocative but I'm not willing to shell out another 60 bucks for it, maybe when it goes on sale at some point.

It kind of just plods along. It's quite easy. You never really lose or are challenged. Exploration is nonexistent and both finding items and "solving puzzles" are a formality.
The atmosphere is good and that's about it, but honestly, if I wanted atmosphere I'd dim the lights and put on smooth jazz, not pay whatever amount of money I did for a game.

The miserable gimmicky bosses that function more as interactive setpieces than challenges to your abilities? The incredibly basic "puzzles" and the way the game patronizes the player by having party members explain everything Zelda-style? The really shitty, stiff character models and animations that the game desperately tries to mask behind the snazzy UI?
