the removal of the ability for modders to change the map really hobbled it, many of the GOAT mods for Medieval 2 radically altered the world

Shogun 2 came after Empire, and it's the best game in the series. The real beginning of the end was pic related

It's really not. In fact the only reason Med 2 is any good at all is the modding scene, since the core game is rubbish. Rome 1 was a much better game overall, and didn't need aid from the modders to be good. S2 stands on its own feat, and vanilla alone is amazing.

This is a good one. Modern warfare 2 is possibly my favorite iteration of these games but it was definitely what sealed the deal for console shooters for a very long time

It isn't a contrarian meme. For all the extra features it added, it's nowhere near as smooth an experience as R1 or S2, both of which are better core games. Med 2 main relevance comes from being the premiere platform for the modders.
