It didn’t, the PS3 floundered throughout the 7th gen against the 360 and they both were still fighting for second place because the Wii was so far ahead. Even Kinect was vastly more successful than Sony’s answer to Nintendo, PlayStation move.

I don't see profit as a win for the customer or when you throw away your reputation for it. They ruled the world in the 80s and early 90s. I'm talking from a customer point of view. And the first two playstation consoles crushed it and nothing has been the same since.

I'm not in the console war anymore so I can only speak from looking at a device and thinking how many of its games do I really feel I would want to play for it? Wasn't kidding about the 4 games thing, because that is the list.

As consumers we all lost this last one and the one before wasn't much better. The number of worthy unique games that all three consoles have had put together the last two gens would barely be enough to justify buying one unless you can get the console super cheap like I did on the WiiU/Wii and then fill in its library with emulation. Switch is in that boat, with being a way to play games that are on everything else but in bed.

But it doesn't make any sense to ONLY use console sales to determine who wins.
Excluding handheld sales, game sales and general profitability is simply a way for Sony fans to pretend that they're on top.

Even though it just barely sold more than the Xbox, Sony took a much bigger financial hit on the system than Microsoft did for theirs. As bad as the red ring was, the first few years of PS3 were a complete disaster on par with the Xbone and even worse in some regards

Wii won what? I dont care how many units it sold, how many games did it have that were worth a shit or will be remembered. Hell if you are going by units sold take about half the 360 sales away for repeat business because they broke.

The 360 was much better than the PS3 in the first few years (better multiplat versions, better and more exclusives) but in the last few years of the generation it got completely btfo by the PS3. The 360 had literally no game except the usual Halo/Forza while the PS3 got huge hit after huge hit.

Even when PS3 sold a bit more than 360 it lost its position at the top and for several years was in third place.
It was a huge blow, although the brand remained strong thanks to a strong first party lineup (and when Nintendo and MS werent clearly giving a fuck anymore)
