Games. Lots of them.

DVD player that could play games.

It's very pretty and modern. Even today.

The last based console

It was a cultural phenomenon. I remember a Desperate mom offering my mom like $700 outside of Babbage’s or whatever At the mall when we bought ours at launch. Perhaps sadly, playing FFX at age 10 was one of the best times of my life.

based on what?

Cheap DVD player got it into every household, and despite better technology, crts held back the graphics of gamecube and xbox. Ps2 actually looked damn good on interlaced displays. Unfortunately on modern HDTVs it looks kind of shit compared to its competitors

Games, games and games. It has everything.

how though?
how come the thing has so many god damn games for it

Lots of good third party games. Dual Shock 2 was kino.

It took such a large percentage of the market that it attracted a ton of third party exclusives.

maybe too much

Microsoft was still new to the scene and Nintendo had made yet another bonehead move by making the discs less than half the size of a regular cd-rom

For only 50 dollars more, your dvd player could also double as a games console.

what an shitty name

This.
I've been a PS2 owner since launch. I must have played hundreds of PS2 games by now and I'm STILL finding out about new stuff I'm interested in.
Just the other day I discovered pic related. Despite the misleading cover art it's not actually a proper racing game; it's really a game in the Japanese Choro-q franchise. It's more of a JRPG with talking cars instead of humans

>The game industry wasn't trying to pander to normies so developers just made the games they wanted to.

yeah, it actually has a ton of cool mechanics, only problem is that the environments are really bland and they reuse the stages.

this, just look at how many good JRPGs the PS2 has that are still played to this day, and that's only one genre

Consoles and games were still being developed by veterans who grew up when they were a niche hobby.

Piracy friendly

Games felt like comic books back then, almost anyone could make them with a few computers and an idea
Most dev studios were like 15 dudes
everyone educated enough to be competitive in the bloated industry nowadays is brainwashed by leftist propaganda to produce agitating and manipulate products

Simple Controller, Good games

no I hate the gooks for what they did to my grandfather and i want to press the nuclear button

Can't believe you fuckers haven't mentioned the REAL one.

Excellent PS1 backwards compatibility.

It's okay. I prefer Wrath of Heaven.

Loads and loads of games with numerous good titles in nearly every genre.
