What's the alternative? It'd be hard to have a story that's interesting if it mostly focuses on killing braindead enemies with no agenda behind them. You could go for some real esoteric shit about survival but it'd be hard to pull off more than once. Zombies will always just be a set piece.

TLOU1 and 2 are Zombie Games in the same way Survivor was a show about surviving on an island. At absolute best, the setting is just set dressing and in general it just fades into the background so the game can focus on weepy melodrama.
You could literally remove the zombie aspect and just make it about a generic apocalypse and nothing would actually change because the zombies are never used in a way that actually interferes with the story on a narrative level.

Do you have something to say? Perhaps I should rephrase: Something like L4D is far better in raw gameplay, but TWD, with its focus on family, is easily the best piece of zombie media ever because of that focus that stays to the letter - right to the fucking end. The worst part is that due to the choice nature of dialogue, most people miss the absolute best part of the game, which is answering "My wife" to the stranger's "Have you ever hurt somebody you care about?"
