No. He's a boring blank slate everyman. It works fine for RE7, since its an fps and way less character-focused, but not a good template for the franchise. I would much have rathered play as any other pre-established character in 8.

The problem with Ethan is that he's barely given much to work with. At least in RE1 Chris and Jill had a cast to play off of, even if only occasionally, but after the opening of the game the only interactions you get are with Zoe in phone calls and the final meeting, and the equivalent of boss demos and Lucas being a dick. Ethan's mostly snarking at the bosses or muttering to himself. If he had more to work with, he would stand out more as a character, though there's an argument to be made that the PSVR focus kept the devs focused on immersion rather than standing there talking.
It seems RE8's at least attempting to have more character interaction and do shit with Ethan as a character rather than be a VR sock puppet.
