tl;dr - some roastie made a shitty game that got praised by the same people she posed in photographs with.

mainly some dudes she partied with and went to their hotel room with to party, making a photo of everyone on the bed. same people who praised her game.

this led to to an "ethics in games journalism" debate, that as with all things Zig Forums, spiraled out of control. other sites actually joined in and it became huge

of course she and the journos in question denied it, and she fired back which turned the whole thing into a feminism vs gamers debate that big sites jumped onto. most hilariously Vice, who made an article about an angry gamer dude and his comments against women by being pro GG. only for that "dude" to come out and reveal that she's a women actually. Vice never changed anything in the article and just left it up.

then there was the whole mascot thing Zig Forums joined in to donate to some asscancer shit, so we/they feel more validated as the whole thing spiraled more into "its just gamers vs women" territory.

due to gamers being gamers, the internet won in the end and now GG is just remembered as an incel movement. i mean they're not wrong.

People calling out the video game journalism industry as being corrupt and filled with political ideologues more interested in pushing their political agenda rather than talking about video games. In return, pretty much every video game news outlet responded the exact same way in a vitriolic manner and doubling down on the things they were doing, proving the people who called them out right. Oh and there was also some shitposting about a female indie video game developer having had sexual relations with a few video game journalists whose outlets wrote about her game.

Multiple sites suddenly started shutting down discussion in the topic, which is of since these are sites (such as even Zig Forums) that talk about even more scandalous shit all the time. It was then found out that many of the people who were accused of fucking the girl, most of whom were in the internet-new sphere, are directly connected to each other, which started gamergate which was a controversy about the interconnectivity of the gaming news media and how some felt that said interconnectivity allowed for people to gain an advantage not by merit but by nepotism. Unfortunately for Gamergate, you have retards like Sargoy and Mundanematt who saw it as a way to push themselves, and the movement quickly turned into a shit-flinging festival between e-celebs.
In the end, the reputation of gaming media was completely ruined, but also the reputation of gaming got fucked too, and it lead to the rise of 'skeptics' that thankfully ended with stuff like the internet bloodsports debacle
