Why did the N64 fail?

Why did the N64 fail?

it had less third party games that people wanted to play that were on the PlayStation instead. It also came out later as well.

it sold well in the US, but also this

Uh it's got zelda and mario what else do you need?

>Zoomers think the N64 failed

The absolute state of this board

neither is accurate to the authentic consoles and this picture was clearly made by a nintendr*ne.

Attached: image0 (4).jpg (3065x2299, 2.86M)

the n64 only had 30 games worth buying
because every third party moved to playstation because it was cheaper to make games for it and the disks hold more memory

It only failed in Japan because nips pick one console winner per generation and stick with it. It sold very well in the US.

it was harder to pirate cartridges than cds

Pretty much this, it had a way bigger support than the sega saturn and better ports than it, some were even better than playstation by a big margin, but overall it was also way smaller than PS1.

The fact that Nintendo had a rocky relationship with third parties and its insistance over catridge were the two things that lead to its issues.

it comes down to a few factors.
>Nintendo had bet on Sega at least doing kind of well so that Sony wouldn't have as much momentum as they did.
>instead, sega royally shat the bed, leading to PlayStation gaining nothing but momentum in 1995 despite having a terrible launch lineup.
>Nintendo wanted to keep cartridges because they were harder to pirate than CD's, but this alienated a lot of developers who wanted to have orchestrated soundtracks, voice acting, and Full Motion Video.
>Nintendo was also heavily focused on being a 3D based system, whereas Playstation could still accommodate a lot of 2D games
>Also cartridge games were a lot more expensive for the consumer than CD's were.
If nothing else, the playstation brand has thrived for its ability to capitalize on the incompetence of its competition. There's never been a single good playstation console launch, but they stay strong because they just don't fuck up a lot.

Also, IIRC, there was a questioning that the N64 had a very small texture cache, and the catridge issue was more on the side that Nintendo didn't have the bigger 32-64MB cartridges at launch, that alone could have helped a lot.

well "failure" is not the right word maybe sure, but why didn't it dominate like the PlayStation is the question. It's literally already been answered though. PS1/N64 was the gen where it became: 3rd party >1st party

it failed to get any bitches wet in the panties with it's kiddy games
Ps1 on the other hand had them soaked

you are ignoring Europe and especially the UK though
>inb4 doesn't matter lol
if those regions don't matter then why did N64 take 2nd place?

My friends bought the PS because you could mod it and play pirated games. Also it had Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, Gran Turismo, etc, games that every kid wanted to play.

fpbp

based

>GoldenEye
>Turok
>Duke Nukem
>Doom 64
>Perfect Dark
>kiddie games
You PS1 fags are delusional. Have sex.

SHIT CONSOLE
SHIT GAMES
only nostalgiafags like n64

because it only had like 15 good games and 10 of those were first party

Cartridges

resetra tranny discord army says sony always wins and they swallow that up

it absolutely failed though. PS1 stomped it in most places and in Japan even the Saturn was making the N64 its bitch. The N64 was the moment Nintendo lost its control of the market and even when it more or less regained it with the Wii era it was only through abandoning the core demographic and focusing on casuals instead. Switch is the first time in decades Nintendo has truly dominated the primary demographic and even then that's more because of the handheld aspect since those are far more popular in places like Japan these days.

>game based on a two year old movie
>Dinosaurs are fuckin nerds and geeks
>Duke Nukem is what nerds think a cool guy plays
>The chads wanted to play actual Doom, which was actually on PlayStation
>GoldenEye but the guns go PEW PEW PEW instead of BANG BANG, actively making a bad game even worse. Also the sci-fi setting is nerdy as hell.

Its the first nogaems machine
T. Loves my n64

Those were pretty good games when they came out but they control like absolute dogshit. I like both consoles but if your a N64 stan you should probably not get in a pissing match about FPS because even the N64's greats aged like milk

N64 was still the patrician choice - gaystation had ff7 and that was about it. N64 had over a dozen fantastic games

Soccered

>only nostalgiafags like n64
not so. i had a PlayStation in the 90's and a gameboy color, i then had a PS2 in the early 2000's, which unfortunately died around 2004. With nothing to play on till i saved up for another, i picked up an N64 for £12, and 3 games for £4 each. SM64, Lylat Wars (Star Fox 64) and Ocarina of time. Tell you what, even though i had already experienced games like GTAIII, the world of OOT was infinitely more alive and a "real place" despite all it's hardware limitations.
Got a PS2 but kept regularly playing my N64 and building a collection of must haves. Mischief Makers was a stand out.

The N64 cartridges were too expensive and nintendo passed that cost onto devs. So devs would just make games for the ps1 instead

If you like N64 you are nostalgia blinded simple as. Saturn and PSX are far superior consoles.

This kills the snoy

>Saturn
lol keep dreaming segafag.

It only had Mario 64, OoT and MM.

>> It's too bad N64 failed as it was basically superior in every way
No one gives a shit about remastering 99% of the PS1 library because its antiquated and soulless even back then. Going back and trying to play PS1 games is hard even for someone like me who was born in the era.

On the other hand N64 controls super well provided yo have a good controller.

all I'm seeing is that third parties completely died on nintendo while they thrived on playstation

Attached: download (1).png (300x500, 15K)

Literally DVD Player.

nintendo were assholes to third party developers and sony was actually welcoming to them

>doesn't name WWF No Mercy
You had one job

Cope. Saturn has patrician arcade games.

Games could be rented those days.

yup

Ps1 had MGS1, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro and others
Fuck off with your console war faggotry
I didnt even have a ps1

PS1 and PS2 could be modded and games would be free.

Pirating for the N64 is impossible

Attached: 2031911F-73B8-41DB-A4B8-1F9F73811B5C.jpg (511x287, 34.13K)

a game cost more than a cd

Crash bandicoot was never good

MGS1 is good, Spyro is a worse version of banjo kazooie

well let's see, Sony games don't leave 8 million sales territory until their seven game, meanwhile nintendo games sell so poorly that only their top 3 are above 8 million. Final Fantasy IX, of all fucking games, outsells more than half of the N64's shitty lineup of bing bing wahoo toy games.

Crash shitacoot oh no man not my running. Spyro was okay as well but comparing it to Donkey Long and other N64 platformers its like a joke man.

sony has been incompetent since the ps3

It didn't

what's even the fucking point of posting when aside from the few annoyed bites like mine, you know you are going to be overwhelmingly ignored for being so ridiculously churlish about it?

ff and mgs jumped ship

MGS series sucks and is overrated. Its got like 1 good game on the PS2.

Attached: 1592376680631.jpg (1920x1080, 351.21K)

The point is that nearly all of the games in the N64 top sellers are kino that aged well and snoystation has a few that play like trash but people have nostalgia goggles on for them.

>banjo kazooie
It's time people got off this things ugly dick

I mean even if you hated FF8 (and are wrong), there's still FF9, Tactics, MGS, various Tekkens, Crash, and a long list of B-tier JRPGs

Nobody wants to play arcade ports when they're so badly downgraded. There's a reason people raved over the home port of Ridge Racer and not Daytona, even though the arcade iteration of Daytona blew Ridge Racer out of the water.

>the saturn fags are here

nintendo was so butthurt at ff jumping ship that they crucified square

>vs. some of the best platformers and party games ever made
