>tfw can score more than Jonas needed to win a few of his 7 titles
>the quality has increased so quickly I wouldn't even qualify for the bracket now

Even if you're retarded enough to still fetishize classic Tetris because you're still salty about T-spins being invented 20 years ago, NES Tetris is the worst possible example of it. Play Tetris Plus or Sega Tetris, literally anything else.

t. boomer who grew up with this shit and switched to modern rules ages ago because nostalgia goggles are for faggots

A bunch of them love T99 and some others play the TGM games. Most of the best talent in NES Tetris are zoomers, by the way.

Both of them still play and stream regularly, and CTWC had a 2019 tournament. I'm not sure what they're gonna do this year though.

Damn dude they should cancel the whole thing forever and scrub the archives.

NES Tetris just works from a spectator point of view. Roughly ten minute games, the marathon of 130 lines on fairly fast 18 and then the transition and chasedown from 19 onwards, no gliding so every action has to be precise, the unforgiving RNG, the "kill"screen being destroyed by people like Joseph after decades. Even the numbers work, unless you're playing ridiculously well most maxouts come close to the killscreen.

It's why this has millions of views and Wumbo gets like a couple thousand.

TGM is classic

>Wumbo
He only gets a couple thousand because he was revealed to cut out his losses from his premieres and acts a sore loser, lol.

If you want T99 and PPT, go watch amemiya.

Maybe this will be the year they introduce seeded runs to Classic Tetris Monthly, starting with CTWC '20

Everything is always about race with you fucking guys

I enjoy CTM, but I just have this nagging feeling it's too open to cheating. They let people use emulators and keyboards, not to mention they could simply be streaming an old game or using tools.

It's a fun thing but I still hold the CTWC as the premier event, even if they're getting bigger scores playing these streamed games.

This is unironically more entertaining than any esport to ever exist.

>modern rules
what? im not a tetris enthusiast, what's modern about falling bricks?

this, the only other thing ive ever watched was fighting games but all those went to shit lately. tetris is the only shit i watch now

Tetris Worlds was the first game to actually standardize things like the randomization of next pieces, how rotation works, and other systems. Prior to that, every developer just did whatever the fuck they wanted, which is why NEStris is a shitshow. Worlds was dubbed "modern" (or The Tetris Standard) when it came out in 2001 and all Tetris games since then are required to follow it.

Modern Tetris games are less rigid. Geometrically impossible spins are more common and encouraged, pieces can glide for several frames after making contact, the RNG is more forgiving and less random (for example the "7 bag" where the game gives the full set of pieces in random order, before starting again, whilst old Tetris is basically straight RNG) leading to players mostly building by memorisation

Which is funny because Worlds is actually a shit game. I do agree, like NES Tetris and Game Boy Tetris having different rotations is odd, but that doesn't make it a "shitshow" on its own merits.

>no hard drop
>no SRS
>no holding pieces
>1 piece preview instead of 3 or 5
>almost no gliding, or moving/rotating the piece once it's on your stack or the ground
>completely random pieces, no 7-bag randomizer
>the colors of each piece change depending on level, whereas I pieces in modern are always cyan, T pieces are always purple etc.
>best way to score in NES is by making Tetrises, as opposed to combos or T-spins which don't give you anything

NES Tetris is just a particularly bad port. Sega did it way better and that's what ultimately led to the TGM series. Fuck, even the Tengen version of NES Tetris was better.

Man, Jonas got fucked by the RNG there. I'd be so pissed off.

I see, thanks. What's SRS?

what ever happened to that browser based battle tetris where if you cleared 2+ lines it sent them to your opponent

Standard Rotation System. That's what determines how the pieces are meant to rotate within their 4x4 block space, as well as how to handle kicks and other mechanics which make it possible to rotate pieces up over other pieces or flip them into "impossible" gaps.

tetris friends died
go play jstris or tetr.io instead

:(
