It's literally the same thing. Ever since the 'Meiji Restoration', a couple of companies (keiretsu) run the country together with the government. There's a reason why they call it Japan Inc. It's corporatism = fascism. That's why it's the only country where a company like Nintendo can get away with making modchips illegal and getting that passed through in law.
America is about 90% all the way there in terms of being as bad as Japan in that respect but there is still 10% of protection against corporate overreach, and we'll take what we can get.
