This. SH2 has a more interesting story, which eventually got ruined by its cancerous fanbase.
But SH3 is by far the best in the series by virtue of being the spookiest one.

I still SH1 is the scariest.

Pretty darn sure you can get Silent hill 2 on PC for free as it's mostly abandonware. I used to have the official modding guide for it and where to download the game and fixes. It's great on PC and one of the best survival horror games to date.
3 Is also very good and playable on PC as the definitive version with HD textures and widescreen hack. I remember both games being a bit of a bitch to get working great though I still highly recommend them.

2 has the story and atmosphere
rest are overrated/optional, there are all kinds of better survival horror alternatives on the PS2 than SH 3 and 4.

1 for overall gameplay, horror, level design, replayability
2 for story (actual masterpiece better than most films, I say this unironically), probably a great entry point for newcomers given how easy it is
3 for characters, state of the art graphics/environments, 'real' music, action style gameplay, cool horror setpieces, best enemy designs

They all have their merits and all three are so close together in quality IMO that it's almost needless to rank them. Ultimately it comes down to personal preference.

1 > 3 > 2 for me

My plan currently is to jump ship to PC gaming next gen because I hate how consoles are (paying for multiplayer and limited backwards compat among other things) but if the Silent Hill rumours about Toyama and Masahiro Ito etc. returning to make a new game exclusively for PS5 are true then I might have to buy an ice-cream sandwich console, bros

That's nothing too bad if you've played King's Field before it. It has a very similar feel and level design to those games.

It's easier to use pcsx2. The only problem is if you run on hardware there's some shadow glitch, but it can be fixed I just don't remember how.
