Should video games be fun?

The graphics are literally the best in any game ever. The combat has been heavily improved to the point that I'd struggle to play the first one again and the story is great. I also love the characters (especially Dina). People are too much crying little piss babies these days. I haven't finished the game yet but it's amazing and I'm loving every moment of it.

I like to play games to have fun, but games as an artform can offer so much more then a book or a film can. Pathologic is a great example of what a game can offer, other then fun.

Games are meant to be a form of escapism and fun. They're not meant to teach, indoctrinate, or educate. The gaming industry is now being "run" by the worst generation in human history and the current state of gaming (as well as other forms of entertainment) is reflective of that.

I'm not saying you should play games that aren't 'fun', I'm saying that games as an artform don't have to be fun. Art isn't always fun.

Maybe in the NES days were games only a way for escapism, but like books they can both challenge you as well as entertain.

The gameplay has to be fun. The story on the other hand can be as serious and dark as the plot requires. The Last of Us exemplifies this perfectly, the gameplay is top notch but the story is a heavy grimdark slough but put these elements together and it just works.

Not really. What emotion they elicit is not only subjective to the player, but also an space that allows games to be more interesting as a medium.

TLoU/Pathologic/Banner Saga tell stories that shouldn't be just "fun". And this alone makes them more interesting depending on your headspace.

Sometimes you want blind fun, sometimes you want a grind, sometimes you want bleak dread, sometimes you want peace.

I don't need a VIDEO GAME to challenge me. I'm intelligent enough to challenge myself and to educate myself on topics that either interest or affect me. When I load a game the last thing I want is to be lectured to about "trans rights" by some failed millennial desperate to "make a difference." When I play RE3, I do so kill zombies and look at Jill's...I don't or need a lecture on wymanz rights.
