I'd say it's almost as if the entirety of the first game was discarded just to tell some different story that could've been with different characters in a different game.
The first game you give a shit about Joel. You play as him in the tutorial, not Ellie. You care about Ellie because you care about Joel and what he went through as everything was just starting. Ellie has her moments, but the story is Joel's.
The sequel completely shits on his character and everything about the first game that mattered.

Thing is, I can understand what the story is trying to go for, sorta.
I can appreciate a revenge story, and one ending in tragedy in that way is fine. Protag losing it all in a blind rage can sometimes make for a good story.
I'd be okay with Joel dying if it was done in a different way. I can be okay with being forced to play his killer and see their side of things, again, if it were done in a different way.
What I'm not okay with is real world politics being hamfisted into a post apocalyptic world. I can't accept how progressive tribalism could be maintained in a world that bleak and full of struggle.
