Tails is just one of many who were completely fucked by the nuking of the series post-06. His arc and development were killed with the rest of the world, and he's been relegated to being purely a side character along with everyone else that isn't Sonic so there's no longer any need to do anything with him other than the absolute most basic "smart guy" role. Tails doesn't need to stand up for himself anymore because you ONLY play as Sonic now. It's a damn shame because he was pretty cool in the final scenes of SA1 and SA2.
Could be worse, though. He could be Knuckles or Shadow, who both had their backstories and character-plots completely uprooted and deleted with the removal of human-world stories and chaos emerald-focused plots, and are both now completely vestigial characters with no relevance or reason to exist.
