Last of Us is unironically hampered by the fact its a game but the entire team is just art school rejects so a movie wouldn't turn out much better.

Why even call it a game at this point if it's clear they would rather not challenge the player at all and just want to make an epic CGI movie?

There is ironically nothing wrong with this. As long as there is an option to increase challenge I see no reason why being able to custom design the difficulty as a bad thing.

This probably also explains why there is no difficulty Trophies tied to it as well

It's for people who have physical disabilities user, it's not a custom difficulty menu like you'd see in Thief or something. Think people with fucked up nervous system's who can't move their hands quickly, or people with terrible eyesight.
