Devil may Cry games

Are they good or memes? I've been thinking about buying them.

40% meme, they are good but the things people say about it that are good the majority of players are terrible at. Everybody thinks they are a style beast but get B's and A's when no ones looking.

I suggest skipping 1, 2. They are pretty much dinky tech demos.
lol, you're talking as if these games aren't worth playing unless you strive for style s ranks?

I heard bad thing about 2 and the reboot, but 1 seems to be universally loved. Should avoid the first 2 altogether and begin with 3?

The first one is good but the gameplay gets massively better at 3 on. Ignore 2 entirely. It depends on what you want your first impression to be, the good gameplay or the actual start of the series.

DMC1, DMC3 and DMC5 are good. DMC4 is unfinished.

1 has the best atmosphere but is kinda janky. 2 is slow, boring, and irrelevant to the overall story, so you should skip it. 3 is the best overall in my opinion. 4 is okay and special edition has the most playable characters, but the levels are kind of annoying. The reboot has some good ideas, but is mostly clunky and way too easy, plus the story sucks extra hard. 5 has the most combat options and best presentation, but the story is kinda weak and it can feel slow sometimes. Overall, I would recommend 3, 1, 4, and 5, in that order.

Play 1 only if you want "soul" and lore. Or if you have never played any you could also start with the reboot. It is still a pretty fun character action game or whatever you want to call it but once you start sinking more hours in you realize that it is not really that amazing. Most hate for that game comes from the story elements.

Play 1 first keeping in mind it's the first game of its kind amd from 2001. You won't want to go back once the gameplay ramps up to being masterful in DMC3. Skip 2. DMC4 is pretty good. The reboot is pretty good. DMC5 is great.

If you pick up the HD collection give 2 a shot sometime when you're bored and want to see if its really so bad.

Appreciate the feedback dude. I guess I'll start at 3 for a good starting point then backtrack to 1, then eventually play 4 and 5. I'm a zoomer that wants to play older games because new ones are load of scripted bullshit.

play 1,3,4, and 5 in that order

unfinished how?

Production mismanagement from Capcom. The devs were given the same budget as a PS2 game when they had to work on a new engine on the PS3. Then they told them to make the game multiplat. Then they stuck to their original release date. About half the game's campaign is playing the same levels in reverse with a different character. Then you fight all the bosses you've already fought for the third time for the last two levels.

basically, capcom had them make a ps3/x360/pc game with the same budget as a ps2 game
not adjusting for inflation

Anything 3 and onward is more worthwhile

1's still the GOAT.

this isn't a 3x3 thread

No, it's DMC thread and DMC is my #1 so deal with it.

if it's #1, why'd you put it 5th in your chart?

God i fucking hate jester

Middle row is top 3.

WELCOME TO HELL, DEVIL-BOY! JESTER'S GONNA SPANK YOUR BUTT, SPANK YOU ON THE BUUUUUUUUTT!

they're not good, they're great.
the game's are over the top and pretty much 90% of the things it shows you in cutscenes, you can pull off in game.

1 is my favorite because reasons, but 3 is the best in the series and the games from 3 onwards are completely different from 1 and 2. The reboot is its own beast.

If you want to play them all, play in release order: 1, 2, 3 (special edition), 4 (special edition), DmC (definitive edition if you play on console, pirate vanilla and sprinkle mods in if you play on PC) and 5. The first 3 games come in a collection, so you won't be as mad after realising you spent money on the terrible game that is 2, because it comes in the same bundle as 3, which is worth your money. Release order will let you understand the history of peaks and valleys of the series and why things are the way they are, plus certifies you as an user that can talk shit about 2 and DmC online from first-hand experience. Most people will tell you to skip 2 and the reboot, but I think it's good to experience why they're bad by yourself.

If you only want to play modern, mainline DMC, just play 3 (special edition), 4 (special edition) and 5 in that order. You'll have a small hole in the overarching story by skipping 1 but it's really nothing that you can't get from context, or simply watching the history recap that comes with 5.

Budget retardation on executives' part. Second half of the game is running through the levels from the first half backwards.

I sure fucking hope so. I'm sure they could find a way to re-introduce them in great way, like having them pipe up before you get to see them.

they're good memes

Fighting Cavaliere Angelo then unlocking Cavaliere as a weapon was super fucking cool. I really enjoyed 5.

play 1 as its great. play 2 until you beat the roof chopper if you dare

If you are buying the reboot keep in mind there's no special edition like the one in ps4, that said, you can still add turbo mode by changing a few lines in the game files. You can also put whichever enemy (and amount) you want in any bloody palace floor to make up for it being so easy (and also add more FOV for that DMC 4 feel)
