Why was God Of War successful?

But TLOU2 is not?
They took a loved protagonist and changed the formula drastically from fighting game where you kill the gods to a story driven game about spreading your wifes ashes and bonding with boi with some fighting sprinkled in and everyone loved it.

Did Naughtydog really see what Santa Monica did with Kratos and think
>If they can do that then we can kill Joel with trannie golfer
?
That would make sense.

Probably because God of War didn't kill off Kratos two hours in and make you play as boi for the rest of the game

this

Amazing, it is almost like Santa Monica understood that people liked the main protagonist.

Funny enough, its the only mainline God of War game where he doesnt die

>God of War didn't kill off Kratos two hours in and make you play as boi for the rest of the game
Wait until what Corey Barlog will do to the next GoW game in a few years.

I feel like he is going to die in the last game and i am fine with that.

FPBP

GOW didn't try to subvert anything. It's a nice game about spending time with your son and teaching him how to be a man but mechanically it's pretty bad and falls apart trying to play GMGOW at the start

I'm fine with it too, but they must give him a dignified death, if they pull a joel I'm going to go fucking nuclear

The team that did new God of War worked on the original games, no? Cory Balrog directed GOW2 and the new one.

GoW didn't blatantly lie to people in order to get them to buy it. TLoU2 literally had trailers that were MADE to make people think Joel had a bigger role in the game than he would end up having, and not only were those scenes not in the game, but he also dies horribly an hour in. GoW felt like it was celebrating what came before, and also has one of the greatest fan-service moments of all time. TLoU2 is just a slap in the face to whoever played the original, and it seems like that was intentional. Any press is good press these days I guess so they are probably loving all of these memes you guys are churning out.

Cory did some stuff on 1, directed 2, and wrote the PSP games. I don't know about the rest of the team but I'm pretty sure there are some veterans at Santa Monica who were around from the start.

>thor holding his mjolnir while kratos is just dying on the floor
oh god

They worked on every god of war game including the mobile one.

because it's a good game?

I wish they kept the God of War 3 ending where Kratos commits suicide after killing all the gods. It was top notch.

movie games can get away with being stupid movie games when the writing doesn't insult the player

Then play gmgow on new game +

Nu-God of War is the most overrated game of the generation
>mfw played through 20 hours of build-up only to be sequel baited
It's a decent enough game, but a 94? You've gotta be shitting me

He still did but because he was immortal he couldn't die. It makes sense if you don't think about it.

were you expecting a god of war game to be like 30 hours long or something?

I agree bringing Kratos back and completely changing his character felt very forced

No, I was expecting to fight Thor or Odin with how much they were talked about throughout the game. Instead, you fight Baldur multiple times and the game doesn't even have a true final boss. When the credits started rolling I was in disbelief

People wanted just more father-daughter adventures in post apocalyptic fungus world

NG+ wasn't available until a while after release. It got better towards the end as you got more skills and stuff but every encounter at the start made me want to claw my eyes out.
>falling oof the bridge and having to fight the two heavy draugr
>the floating witch enemies that turn invisible and shoot projectiles along the floor that blend right in
>the dark elf king
Yeah because the game clearly wasn't about the big ebin fights this time around. They could've done better instead of use the same handful of bosses over and over, but you missed the point if all you wanted was to knockout the whole pantheon.

>They could've done better instead of use the same handful of bosses over and over, but you missed the point if all you wanted was to knockout the whole pantheon
Then they shouldn't have hyped these characters up for the entire game. I didn't even need to take on all of them, just one would've done. When the first you beat is the antagonist for the entire game it's weak as fuck

I had no idea he wrote the PSP games.
Chains of Olympus was one of the best GoW games. The story was surprisingly good, like they still gave a shit about Kratos' character beyond him being a murderous psycho like he was in 2 and 3.

I know the PSP is a shit platform, but for anyone who likes GoW even slightly, I heavily recommend Chains of Olympus.

>Then they shouldn't have hyped these characters up for the entire game.
They don't? They talk about them because they're key players in the background and part of the worldbuilding but they never imply that you're going to fight them. Remember that you only fought Ares in GOW1 and mostly demigods in GOW2. Wasn't until 3 that Kratos started slaying the gods left and right.

>character progression
Vs
>character death
Hmmm
