It's the best roguelike. By far.

what is it and what's so good about it?

only roll minotaur berserkers

Cogmind, and Caves of Qud are on par.

Qud was my favorite for a while but with no real end goal it kind of lost its appeal, also while the world is excellent, probably the best, the randomized text and names is lazy. I was ready to get really invested in the lore and histories but realized it was all essentially gibberish.

Npt OP, but I've played these and brogue, they can't give me the same smooth, pure experience as DCSS. Depends on what you're after I suppose.

thanks i just downloaded this

Create a guy and descend into a dungeon to retrieve an orb. People play it for years without ever winning. I suck at it and have never won but I get slightly farther every time which always makes me want to try again. It's also free.

user please

can you recommend me a decent and easyish roguelike to play while at work during idle times?

Agreed, very well designed

This

Does it have a decent variety of items/events ?

you've never heard of classic roguelikes or dungeons & dragons?

I beat this once with a Minotaur of Okiwaru and even then I only really got by because I had a +14 weapon and a bunch of armor. I still almost died trying to escape the Dungeon because a demon lord spawned and stood on a staircase.
Haven't been able to get a caster past the midgame

>traditional roguelikes
I am so glad this is a dead genre. What a waste.

>le contrarian XD

>niche genre remains niche so it’s dead
I thank god every day I’m not a zoomer. They’re all retarded.

OP you seem to have accidentally posted a DCSS image instead of a NetHack image by mistake.

Traditional roguelikes have always been a net negative to society. The work put into them could have been put into objectively superior genres. You cannot argue against this.

Maj'Eyal is fun, even if it's just the roguelike equivalent of Diablo.

Maj'Eyal is really fun simply because the combat system is more than 'walk into things until they die'

Also it has a ton of interesting lore and many fun classes to play

But the best roguelike is Cataclysm DDA. Best survival game. Best rogue.

how do I git gud though? is bulkwark really a meme?

>Cataclysm DDA
literally boring

>dcss
devs are obsessed with "cutting bloat" which is to say, literally just removing content, constantly and forever. At least it's gotten bad enough now that a billion forks have popped up to readd shit that was taken out, but still, a lot of damage has been done. Plus I really don't like the leveling system because it pretty much results in every class being functionally identical by D:10.
DoomRL is a very unique, solid game but unfortunately has been completely abandoned and replaced by Jupiter Hell, which isn't as good. Plus it doesn't have that much depth to it.
Honestly I could just never get into either of these. Qud was just extremely opaque to me, and while I love a lot of things about Cogmind I don't like that it actively discourages combat a lot of the time.
