Basically, it's the same reason GoT S7 was lauded despite being complete and utter dogshit, but 8 was hated for being slightly worse. They pushed it too far, and the characters people liked were shit on, which is fine if you're trying to make an edgy story, but not so much if you're looking for mass market appeal.

At the end of the day, most people view entertainment for wish fulfillment. The bad guys lose, the good guy wins, if push comes to shove they can enjoy a pyrrhic victory, but it absolutely has to be a victory.

Most of these children would've liked the game if the ending was Ellie tearing off Abby's face while she screams and cries. But the story Druckman wanted to tell was one he didn't have the chops to tell, so after fucking it up he just tacked on a "violence bad" climax that left all the retards feeling empty handed, which is why you're seeing backlash from people who can't tie their own shoes.

The game is terrible, but not much worse than the first one. The massive disparity in user reaction solely comes down to how badly the story fails at the most basic tenets of storywriting, so even morons notice it this time around.
