I haven't played the first one but I watched a couple hours of TLOU2 and she comes across as a massive cunt. I guess it's because of the hardships she endured but so did everyone else in the game and they aren't as unlikeable.

She was a bit of a brat in the first game too. And she wasn't that significant of a character either, it was mostly Joel who carried the first game and Ellie was mostly likable because of what she meant to Joel. The difference is that in the first game there's plenty of growth and development in their relationship that would allow you to forgive them for their faults, while in the sequel you just get nothing. The sequel was a solid opportunity to continue this but perhaps focus more on Ellie's development instead of Joel's. Instead it simply wants to be miserable all around, written by a deluded Druckmann that thinks this is a profound, eye-opening and challenging story, when in truth it's a bland story that lacks any interesting beats, suffers from awful pacing, and sees no significant character growth or narrative payoff at any point in its 25 hour long story. Everyone and everything sucks at the beginning, and the rest of the story is just everyone and everything sucking more. Hope you enjoyed that compelling experience and learned something you didn't already know, like violence is bad, even though this game never gives you the choice to not be violent, because then it wouldn't have a cheap moral to feed us, which would leave it with nothing at all. She is rightfully mad at Joel for lying to her but i hate that the TLOU2 completely retcons what was ambigous decision in TLOU into making Joel the obvious villain. We know there were other kids like her and experiments all fucking failed. This all seems to me like Druckmann thought that everyone would hate Joel at the end but was surprised that people actually agreed with him so he remade everything to paint him like a bad guy.
