I know this is some dodonpachi game, but I've never played through a bullet hell/shmup before. What's a good starting place? I've been thinking about trying Final Boss.

I like the music

You can start by emulating DoDonPachi, the previous entry in the series to the OP pic (which is DaiOuJou, a sequel that is much harder in every way).

This has a MAME setup with DDP and tons of other games optimized to reduce input lag. It's where I started a few years ago

Why is she hugging the ship

i want to fuck the dolls

great music

wonder what happened to CAVE
seems like some key people left and since then they've only done ports of their old games

technically they're still alive, they should still be able to make new games, top down shooters don't change that much

start with

mushihimesama
youtube.com/watch?v=Rw1BUB9q9D4

or mushihimesama futari
youtube.com/watch?v=M4wxcs0UwZA

or dodonpachi saidaiojo

>simple, but addicting gameplay
>most look beautiful, both in-game and in promotional art
>best music in all of media
I really wanna get into shmup bros, but theyre TOO FUCKING HARD. The only one I've been able to 1cc is Hellsinker, and that was with Minogame. Gonna try out Ikaruga again later today, wish me luck bros

Play shmups and not bullethell then

dodonpachi is too old
just dive in the deep end

they're not that hard when you realise your character only has like a 4pixel hitbox

just dodge better and use your peripheral vision

required reading if you like cave shmups

reminder not to use promised dawn

god why were all the endings depressing as fuck? i like how the best shot type had the bad ending

greatest shmup ever made
the gameplay
the music
the visuals
it's all fucking perfect

I'd hug my crashed super experimental jet

superb art
where's the high res version?

the ship is unwell ;_;

Don’t feel too bad. Even pros take 800+ hours learning to 1CC 2-All in Ketsui. You really need to be dedicated to 1CC most of Cave’s shmups, which is why as good as they are I will never recommend them to someone getting into the genre, unless you play on novice and only try to complete the first loop.

best I could find

It looks like an ocarina

not bad, the biggest i could find was ps2 cover and it's a pretty bad scan
a real shame these images are so low res
as much as i hate this word these 90s and early 00s japanese aesthetics are pure fucking kino

They didn't even have a hand in those ports. They pivotted into mobile games and fashion after SaiDaiOuJou. They seem to want to get back into making games or at least they seem to be more keenly aware that people enjoy their games since the staff used to have weekly streams up until Covid happened.

Mushihimesama looks pretty dope.
Does it go on sale often on Steam?

It's an ok shmup. Guwange is much better though.
The main problem with DDP is how strict the scoring system is. It's really not fun to learn

i think what i have is an edited version but its pretty clear lookin. i wish tumblr didnt remove ways to view uncompressed images

Attached: tumblr_orpp19TDoK1ulp8mfo1_1280.jpg (1280x1677, 929.18K)

Reminds me of Yukikaze.

I used to play shmups quite a lot, but I stopped playing, because I dislike playing on emulator.
There are just no decent ports for pc, except a few exceptions, and all the games I like in the genre have to be played on emulator. Fuck playing on emulator.

I know what you mean. That and getting older's been delaying my reaction time

what's wrong with emulator besides the obvious MAME cores being trash and lacking features?

dunno, it's pretty cheap anyway
I got it to encourage cave to put more on steam, and they didn't put futari or the other good ones >:/

I finally got to play SaiDaiOuJou recently
It has one of the greatest soundtracks ever, but it's also difficult not to see it as inferior to DFK in most ways, although I like the character designs a lot
I haven't learned the scoring system yet, but according to what I know it's based more around cancels and activating hyper than chaining, which sounds a bit lame

literally the best shmup, go ahead call me a cave loving faggot.

Goo-wang is cool, but the hand-eye coordination you need to control the genie is just too much. It’s completely different from most other Cave shmups, which makes it difficult to get into. Same reason why I dislike ESPrade: scoring involves using the secondary shot to soften enemies and then chain kill with the primary shot. The hand-eye coordination required to play this deliberately is high. DDP is very simple to learn (just chain kills without dropping the chain) but learning how to maintain your chain takes some degree of creativity, and I love that aspect of it.

thats why you should play from time to time just to sharpen your brain

Hikari is mine.

It just doesn't feel right. Especially when you constantly have to do savestate practice like in shmups. It feels so cheap and as if you are cheating.

I want more steam ports. But even when they come to steam, you can't practice them there, like with Gunbird 2 now, which doesn't even have stage select.

>savestates
Am I just stupid and have something set up wrong? Save States end up either failing or crashing with any MAME core I use. I was just trying with Futari before character select and it simply hangs and softlocks everytime on the normal core, the 2015 core simply doesn't allow them

look at this image of my wife

>the hand-eye coordination you need to control the genie is just too much
It's just awkward at first, but you get used to it. Guwange is a lot more about memorization than usual Cave games. Skillfull dodging is not that important. Once you memorized good routes, the game becomes a lot easier. You just have to route for 2 in it, because you control 2 characters at the same time basically.

>learning how to maintain your chain takes some degree of creativit
Not really. Most people who play DDP for score just simply copy replays. It requires no creativity at all.

The Ikaruga artwork is on another level. If you haven't familiarized yourself with the plot of the game, knowing it makes it even better.

anyone knows any good euroshmups?

Attached: 1592288138091.jpg (708x1003, 214.65K)

>Am I just stupid and have something set up wrong?
Sounds like it. Maybe your Mame can't handle Futari? That game is too much for some versions i think.

ive always wondered if those streaks are supposed to be burn marks or part of the paint job

Why did she have to turn evil bros?

euroshmups?

Boogie Wings is not a good game.

anyone else have this model kit? ive never built one myself before but i wanna at least own this one. how difficult do you think it would be for me?

Attached: 02275.jpg (750x877, 223.32K)

Sine Mora is relatively fun. Also pretty impressive graphics for a shmup.

Attached: 1827373.jpg (616x353, 96.44K)

Most likely the latter. Ikaruga's art style is a mix of traditional Japanese art and mecha, so a lot of the designs have natural imagery with water, fire, darkness, and light across them.

Attached: ikaruga02.jpg (618x617, 57.68K)

I just 1cc after about 8 hours of practice, its probably one of my fav shumps now. Id say its worth full price desu.

DDP:DOJ is stupidly difficult. Start with Espgaluda, which is probably Cave's easiest if you bomb manually and don't rely on the autobomb like an idiot.
