Because that character get's brutally murdered within the first two hours of the game by a literally who, so the people that bought it because of all of the marketing that included Joel will feel cheated. I'm not saying that you can't kill of the main character even if he was used in the marketing for the game, however you have to do it really fucking carefully to not piss people off and not as a "bet you didn't expect this, huh? The character you like is dead, fuck you.".
