A significant portion of MGS2 involved a recreation of the Shadow Moses events with someone who wasn't Solid Snake. If you made Solid Snake the playable character then that completely undermines that point.

I’m baffled by people saying (and I’ve only seen it here, maybe it’s people who weren’t around then) that MGS 2 was only embraced later on. As somebody who played it when it came out and followed the reviews and talk about it as it was happening, I can tell you that MGS 2 was embraced right away. The reviews were glowing. Personally, it was one of the most impressive games I’d played at that point, up there with Super Mario 64. It was one of the big reasons to get a PS2. As far as having to play as Raiden, it was not a big deal. It was a surprise. You went, “Hm, who’s this guy? Where’s this going?” But no serious person threw a tantrum because they couldn’t play as Solid Snake. It was not some scandal. Most people went along with it because the game was great. You trusted the creator. The general attitude was, “Kojima, you trickster!” MGS 2 was not only considered a masterpiece in its day, but it was considered more evidence of Kojima’s genius.

Yes I agree with you. I played MGS2 maybe a year after it came out and i had waited because i heard about the controversy, but it was still overall well received
