See, this is my issue with the criticisms towards The Last of Us 2. Niel Druckmann is going to walk away from this thinking "I guess killing Joel was too daring and controversial for the modern gamer" when that's not the issue. The issue is that this game represents the absolute worst trends. It's preachy, it's pretentious, it's a walking simulator; it was clearly designed to be a game that "talks down to cis white dudes" if you know what I mean.

Say what you will about Nier Automata, but that game was significantly more tasteful than The Last of Us 2. For fucks sake, Nier Automata literally killed the poster character too, but that didn't have any backlash because it was handled perfectly. It wasn't shocking for the sake of being shocking.

While you're right about that stuff, Joel dying and having to play as Abby really are the primary reasons the game is getting so much hate. TLOU1 is safe normalfag fuel, while TLOU2 is a subversive sequel that doesn't exist to fulfill their wishes. Even if it were done well the masses would still hate it because they want capeshit.

No one considers Nier Automata a ten out of ten masterpiece or the Schindler's List of video games.

So first of all, they are not even remotely on the same level.

Nier Automata - Twitter fag can't even spell the name right - deals with issues of what makes humans human, life/death, how to find meaning in a world without meaning / God, what makes us different from our enemies, etc. And lots of other stuff - even the subquests tell poignant, little stories.

TLOU2 is basically a 20 hour snuff porn about "Revenge is bad, okay?" and it's all super obvious and on the nose - typical for Western Devs.

But I feel like the creative choice to kill Joel stems from Naughty Dog's desire to "stick it to the audience". Killing a character like Joel could have had such potential, but it was squandered for the sake of making something deliberately awful.

Nier Automata isn't misery porn. Beginning with the game wants you to empathize with literal objects who develop human feelings. The setting isn't gritty, it feels post-apocalyptic but beautiful and melancholic. Automata isn't focused on cruelty or nihilism.
