Because Thanos is basically our guy. Modern marvel movies dont feel like movies but rather a tv show that never ends and no real stakes, Thanos like the smart people in the audience can see this problem and corrects it ending all capeshit and smiling before the credits rolled in Infinity War. Of course endgame comes and undoes this, but all things considered taken on its own his character arc in that movie and the feeling you got watching that ending is the opposite of cookie cutter marvel formula.

We're just left with all this "no no no, that wasn't the happy ending! The person who deserves the happy ending is this new female character we introduce!" over and over again.

This is actually only half true. You see Last of Us and Game of Thrones could have both coasted on their pandering to progressives and gotten away with it but things ended bleakly for everyone. Normies were defending bad writing in GoT to the end until yaas queen went evil which was a road too far. Last of Us does the same pissing off progressives by having these lgbt/female characters suffer too much and Dina and Ellie breaking up. Star Wars fucked itself by switching directors and writers constantly, the people who liked Last Jedi werent happy and for people who hates it Stsr Wars was unsalvaheable after that mess. It’s a case of all three failing by starting to pander but not fully committing enough for the “woke” audience, even in SWs case where they try to win everyone else back its still too shit for anyone to care.
