Well, for one, no Puyo game has had a proper roster above 24 characters, meaning each game has had to cut a good number of good characters. The recent Puyo games have been relatively mediocre in terms of gameplay, and even unlockable content in recent games is mostly just reused from 20th. Neither the stories of Puyo Puyo's original universe or Puyo Puyo Fever have been continued or completed in any satisfying way, with repeated spinoffs and reboots leaving any character development or interesting things frozen. Pretty much every Puyo game since 20th reuses shittons of Fever/Fever 2's OST for around half of their soundtrack. Akira Mikame's art direction for the series is consistently mediocre compared to both the direction that the Compile titles and Fever/Fever 2/15th/to a lesser extent 20th went for. Chronicles went for a full RPG story mode but was crippled by a comically bland story and poor artstyle, among other things, and SEGA seems to have ditched this. Pretty much every character design introduced in Puyo Puyo Quest is fucking bland, and SEGA seems interested in introducing this garbage designs into the main games if Quest was anything to go by. Just about all of Puyo's best entries are lacking good features/characters from other entries, are no longer playable without emulation, and/or don't have any decent means of online play.

Also forgot to mention that only about three or four of Puyo's games are actually playable with an official English translation, with Fever/PPT being two of those. Fever has good art direction and a neat story mode but severely lacks in content when compared to later titles, and PPT is all-around mediocre as fuck unless you just want to play Tetris.
That'd be pretty neat, but I'd really like an actual Puyo game too.
