It made the series' protag, whose last appearance 30 years ago portrayed him as a moral paragon, a bitter exile responsible for the new villain's vendetta because he made a very contrived mistake that he overcame before. Also, a good third(?) of the movie is a slow chase sequence with intensely unlikable characters. A lot of the contempt comes from the director and the movie's claiming all criticism was because fans didn't get their theories confirmed, even though other popular movies are subject to fan theories and didn't receive similar criticism. It's not the worst movie ever though and not worth complaining about since it's been like 3 years or something.

Yeah, Luke gets a sort-of-redemption so it's not as bleak as this game. Both Luke and Joel's death scenes are tonally consistent with their stories, but they're both set up so poorly they didn't affect me. Luke redeeming himself by stalling means little when the entire conflict is his fault for a dumb reason, and Joel is dumb for walking into an obvious trap. Hard for me to feel the intended pathos when the characters need to go momentarily braindead for scenes to happen.
