Depends on who you ask - I'm a fan of having lots of distinct silhouettes and animations so having a bunch of characters who look similar bothers me, but other people don't seem to have an issue with it

It’s because they feel as though their never-ever was “robbed of a slot” just because a FE character got in instead. It’s even weirder when they take it out on Corrin and Byleth the most, even though they should be happy that they at least have a unique play style and don’t just play like Marth but marginally different.
In general, move-set uniqueness should take priority of character designs/rep count, but that’s what I think.

While I hate how much half of the fire emblem characters ape Marth, I never had an issue with their look.
They've got a lot of blue over all but none of them look the same and are easily distinguishable at a glance or even from just their silhouettes.
And I mean Roy is the biggest mistake out of them all, and yet he doesn't look like Marth.

I don't understand your logic. Shouldn't the "slot robbing" argument be MORE valid if the time was put in to make the character unique? It's not as though they have infinite time and resources. Eventually development's going to stop. Anime swordsmen like Shulk and Cloud have a more distinct surface level appeal than most of the FE cast do from each other. Hell, Mario and Luigi do too. Fucking DAISY has a more distinct appeal to any given player's design and personality sensibilities from Peach than Lucina has from Marth.

I liked Byleth. He's a good character from a good game.
Corrin on the other hand isn't. He stole precious dev time back in Smash 4 and now in Ultimate that could have gone to other characters. Imagine if we got a different new character or a rework of an old one. That would have been lovely, but we got C*rrin instead.
